Fashion is not only about color or silhouette; it can also convey messages through texture. From this idea emerged Textura, a project exploring textile manipulation techniques that transform ordinary fabric into unique garments with strong visual impact and character.
The Textura project was developed during an internship at Ali Charisma Studio, which took place from January to March 2025. The studio is known for its artistic and experimental approach to design. During the internship, participants were given the opportunity to explore various fabric manipulation techniques as a form of visual innovation in contemporary fashion.
Understanding Fabric Manipulation
Fabric manipulation is a technique of transforming textiles through folding, stitching, layering, or structural shaping to create new textures. Although not new in the fashion world, this technique continues to evolve, offering diverse visual expressions depending on the designer’s creativity.
In this project, techniques such as folding and smocking were applied to create compelling visual effects. The results can be seen in fabric surfaces forming three-dimensional patterns, ranging from soft waves to protrusions resembling blooming flower petals.
The Creative Process Behind Textura
Throughout the process, the interns conducted multiple experiments, from practicing basic sewing techniques and selecting suitable fabrics for folding, to arranging patterns to maintain balance when worn. One of the main challenges was ensuring comfort despite the dense textural embellishments.
Several outcomes of the exploration were developed into jackets and outerwear, featuring bold color combinations such as bright orange and deep green. With striking textural elements, the resulting garments appear dynamic, as if the fabric itself becomes part of the body’s architectural structure.
Fabric manipulation techniques not only enhance visual aesthetics but also serve as a medium for expressing design character. This approach allows designers to create more personal works that stand apart from mass-produced fashion. Amid increasingly uniform fashion trends, explorations like Textura represent a bold and artistic form of creative expression.
Furthermore, Textura opens opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between textile art, pattern engineering, and fashion design. This approach offers a fresh alternative to enrich the local fashion industry with works that remain functional while carrying strong artistic value.
Through Textura, participants learned that fabric is not merely a body covering, but a medium capable of creating volume, structure, and emotion. In the fast-paced fashion industry, detailed explorations like this highlight the importance of slowing down the process and appreciating creativity more deeply.
It is hoped that this work will inspire young designers to experiment more boldly, reinterpret traditional techniques in innovative ways, and create garments that are not only visually appealing but also meaningful.
